The Region of Queens tourism industry is being given a boost, thanks to the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a major job creation initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret’s, today announced investments of $200,815 for the construction of a new visitor information centre in Liverpool, and $86,857 for upgrades to the Seaside Recreation and Community Centre.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting communities hard hit by this global economic downturn,” said MP Keddy. “Investments in tourism infrastructure will foster long-term prosperity in the Region of Queens and help the community weather the current economic crisis.”
The new visitor information centre in Liverpool will replace an existing facility that is more than 30 years old. The project will include improvements to the surrounding waterfront infrastructure and upgrades to walkways and parking facilities to increase aesthetic appeal, safety and accessibility.
The Seaside Recreation and Community Centre project includes the creation of an access path from the facility to the beach, upgrades to increase the accessibility of the facility, enhancements to the current heating system, and the replacement of windows. The project will also support the installation of informational signage along Highway 103 and Route 3.
“A new visitor information centre will mean superior support for folks visiting our beautiful and historic community,” said Mayor John Leefe, Region of Queens Municipality. “We are firmly of the view that strong guest services will increase our tourism capacity, thereby providing economic benefits for local businesses.”
Over the next two years, CAF will deliver a total of $1 billion to local economies throughout Canada. The total CAF allocation for Atlantic Canada is $100.4 million and is delivered in the region by ACOA.
Ian Kent of the Seaside Recreation and Community Centre Association commented, “The upgrades will make the Seaside Centre more accessible for both people with disabilities and other visitors on a year-round basis, and help to reduce operating costs.”
