OTTAWA - The Government of Canada is supporting nine organizations across the country to help Canadians lower vehicle emissions and encourage drivers to improve fuel efficiency. A total investment of $970,000 will assist local campaigns sponsored in five provinces.
"During the summer months, when families are taking advantage of their vacation, it is most important that we practice smart driving techniques to keep our air clean," said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources. "This investment will help Canadians to reduce emissions by adopting driving habits that lower fuel consumption."
For example, Langley Township in British Columbia's Fraser Valley will use "anti-idling ambassadors" to help educate drivers about the benefits of turning off their vehicles. The Government of Canada's ecoENERGY for Personal Vehicles Program is also supporting vehicle emissions projects in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia, all with the goal of promoting fuel-efficient driving habits.
The ecoENERGY for Personal Vehicles Program supports the Government of Canada's commitment to reduce Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and is part of the Government's ecoENERGY initiative - a $3.9-billion investment in measures to help Canadians use energy more efficiently, boost renewable energy supplies and develop cleaner energy technologies.
