Residents of Bath will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding for upgrades to the village’s water treatment and distribution system. The announcement was made today by Mike Allen, MP for Tobique-Mactaquac, and the Honourable Ronald Ouellette, Minister of Agriculture and Aquaculture. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for residents.
This project will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing $20,000 towards the total eligible costs of the project. The Village of Bath is contributing the remaining $20,000. “Our federal investment of $20,000 will help the Village of Bath upgrade its infrastructure, ensuring that residents have access to a safe and dependable water supply,” said MP Allen. “Our government recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can improve quality of life, attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come.”
“These upgrades will go a long way in ensuring that public health and the environment in New Brunswick are protected and preserved,” said Minister Ouellette. “Today is yet another example of what can be achieved through partnership and cooperation.”
“These are not large dollar projects as compared to other recent announcements around the province; however, they are just as important,” said His Worship Troy Stone. “These projects, when completed, will provide for the uninterrupted supply of safe water at all times. Power interruptions do not happen often, but when they do, it can create problems with our water supply. The safety and security of the village’s water supply will be advanced to the highest level possible with these upgrades.”
Funding for this project will enable the Village of Bath to set up an automatic starter for the generator at the main well house and purchase generators for two booster stations. The upgrades will provide continuous power to pump water and maintain pressure in the lines during power outages, helping to prevent boil water orders. A new automated chlorination system will also be installed to help ensure that the water supply is accurately metered and chlorinated, improving the system’s overall efficiency.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
