Harvey, New Brunswick - Residents of Harvey and McAdam are benefiting from joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade water and wastewater systems and restore village property. The funding was announced today by the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Greg Byrne, Minister of Finance.
These projects will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick will each invest a total of $294,083 in three community projects, including two in Harvey and one in McAdam. The respective municipalities are contributing the balance of total eligible costs.
“Our federal investment of nearly $300,000 will assist Harvey in improving municipal property and upgrading important sewer infrastructure, and will help McAdam residents connect to the common water and wastewater systems,” said Minister Thompson. “The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can improve quality of life, attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come.”
“These upgrades will go a long way in ensuring that public health and the environment in New Brunswick are protected and preserved,” said Minister Byrne. “Today is yet another example of what can be achieved through partnership and cooperation.”
The two projects in Harvey, with total federal and provincial investments of $460,432 will improve the community’s wastewater collection and treatment services and restore a large municipal property for potential commercial development.
Specifically, improvements will increase the aerated lagoon’s capacity by 30 per cent and will ensure the treatment facility is in line with new standards of the Canada-wide Strategy for Municipal Wastewater Effluent.
A second Harvey project involves a four-hectare property which was inherited by the village and is located in the centre of the community. The abandoned property was once the location of a saw mill and, as such, contains dangerous wood waste. Funding for the remediation project, which will include the removal of the decomposing waste, will reduce environmental, fire and safety risks while restoring the land for future development.
The Village of McAdam will receive a combined federal and provincial investment of $127,734. This project will extend the accessibility of the community water and wastewater systems to additional homes in McAdam. The funding will support costs associated with the survey, design, tender and construction of the additional piping. The project is expected to alleviate the use of problematic wells for several property owners.
These projects are among 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.

Residents of Harvey and McAdam will benefit from joint federal and provincial investments to improve local water and wastewater services. In addition, funding will enable an important environmental clean-up of an abandoned mill site in the Village of Harvey. The announcement was made today by Veterans Affairs Minister, Greg Thompson, together with Finance Minister Greg Byrne, Harvey Mayor Winston Gamblin and McAdam Mayor Frank Carroll.
The federal and provincial governments will each invest nearly $300,000 in Harvey and McAdam for these significant community projects. The two municipalities will contribute the balance of the respective project costs.
