Hillsborough, New Brunswick
Residents of Hillsborough will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade the community’s drinking water and waste water infrastructure. Project funding was announced today by Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy-Royal, and the Honourable Mike Murphy, Minister of Justice and Consumer Affairs. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for residents.
This project will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have each committed $1,285,633 towards the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Village of Hillsborough will cover the remaining costs of the project, which is valued at just under $4 million.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can attract business and create jobs today and for years to come,” said MP Moore. “Our investment of more than $1.2 million will allow Hillsborough to improve the reliability of its drinking water and the performance of its waste water systems.”
"The Province is very pleased to join with our federal colleagues in investing more than $2.5 million for Hillsborough today," said Murphy. "This investment will enable the construction of a new aerated waste water treatment lagoon and will upgrade the existing municipal water system’s production wells."
This project will address Hillsborough’s longstanding need for reliable waste water and potable water infrastructure through the construction of a new lagoon and two new production wells. In addition, a UV disinfection system will be added to the new wells to meet provincial guidelines.
“We are thrilled with the announcement for our infrastructure funding. We have been dealing with water issues for years, and this is a step in the right direction to resolve it. As Mayor on behalf of council, staff and citizens, I would like to thank the provincial and federal governments for approval of this funding,” said Hillsborough Mayor Donna Bennett.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
