Minto, New Brunswick - Residents of Minto will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to extend the community’s sanitary sewer collection system. This project was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and Eugene McGinley, MLA for Grand Lake-Gagetown. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.
This project will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing over $580,000 towards the total eligible cost of the project. The Village of Minto is contributing the balance of the $1.75 million total project cost.
“The Government of Canada is working together with the provincial and municipal governments to deliver results to the people of New Brunswick with the expansion of the Village of Minto’s sanitary sewer collection system,” said Minister Ashfield, “The Government of Canada’s investment of over $580,000 through the Building Canada Fund will help stimulate the local economy and lay the foundation for community growth.”
“This sanitary sewer collection system expansion project will go a long way in ensuring that public health and the environment in New Brunswick are protected and preserved,” said Mr. McGinley, on behalf of Environment Minister Rick Miles. “This infrastructure project will help contribute to the sustainability of our community infrastructure.”
“Today's announcement will have a great impact on the Village of Minto,” said his Worship Eric Barnett, Mayor of Minto. “The infrastructure investment announced today will enable Minto to expand the sewer service to Diamond Drive and Pleasant Drive by adding more homes. It will help our environment and will put Minto a step closer to having all of Minto on our sewer system.”
The project involves an extension of 3,100 metres to the community’s sanitary sewer collection system. These improvements will enable residential lots that currently have aging private septic systems to join the community’s waste water system. The upgrades will also service undeveloped land, preparing the village for future growth.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
