Rothesay, New Brunswick - Residents of Rothesay are benefiting from joint federal and provincial funding to extend and upgrade the town’s water infrastructure. The funding was announced today by Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John and the Honourable Stuart Jamieson, Minister of Tourism and Parks.
These projects will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
Through the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component, the governments of Canada and New Brunswick will each invest $1.5 million in the project, while the municipality is contributing an equal amount to complete the project.
Further federal funding in the amount of exactly $1.27 million from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund will go towards a second component of this project. The Province of New Brunswick will also contribute $1.27 million towards this project component.
“Our federal investment of over $2.7 million will improve the quality of water and life for Rothesay residents today and help to position the municipality for future growth,” said MP Weston. “The governments of Canada and New Brunswick recognize the importance of infrastructure investments to building a strong economy and improving the quality of life for Canadians, which is why we are working together to accelerate progress on projects like those being announced today.”
“The provincial government’s matching investment of $2.7 million will ensure that the Town of Rothesay continues to be a place where people can live in a healthy, clean and safe environment,” said Minister Jamieson, representing Environment Minister Rick Miles and Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
Among the project improvements funded under the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component are an extension of a main trunk water line and highway crossing to include a new water storage facility, and approximately 2.8 kilometres of new water main pipe to connect two parts of the existing system. The project will improve system reliability for water distribution and treatment, improve the quality of drinking water and increase the number of households with access to quality drinking water.
This project is among 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
A second component of the project, supported by the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund will consist of a 2.4 km water main expansion and the installation of two dozen fire hydrants and other equipment to join two parts of the town water system. This component will enable the direct connection of 64 customers currently on individual wells and will upgrade the water supply to another 335 customers, including an elementary school, to meet Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.
“The project announced today will improve our water system incrementally ensuring all current and future Rothesay water consumers enjoy a reliable supply of drinking water meeting national standards,” said Bill Bishop, Mayor of Rothesay. “Rothesay Council is very appreciative of this support from the federal and provincial governments and look forward to an early start on the project.”
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
