Allan, Saskatchewan
Allan will move forward with rehabilitation of the town swimming pool thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Randy Weekes, MLA for Biggar, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for pool renovations that will create jobs for the Town of Allan.
"I'm pleased to announce our Government's support for the town's swimming pool upgrades," said Minister Yelich. "Today's investment will prolong the life of our community's swimming pool, so it can be better equipped to serve and benefit the residents of Allan now and in the future."
Funding of $191,666 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Allan will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $575,000.
Funding will go towards the reconstruction of the Allan and District swimming pool basin, deck and mechanical systems around the basin. These improvements will reduce operating costs through the use of solar water heating.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Allan pool upgrades to a healthy and active community," said MLA Weekes. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"The Town of Allan and surrounding community are overjoyed to have the Recreation Infrastructure Canada program approved for our Swimming Pool Retrofit," said Mayor Sommerfeld. "Our community has spent three years fundraising for the project and this helping hand from the Federal and Provincial Governments will enable us to have an operating pool next summer, a great way for Allan to celebrate our 100th birthday."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
