Viscount will move forward with the conversion of a local curling rink to an archery centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Randy Weekes, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Biggar, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for the conversion of the Viscount Curling Rink, a project that will create jobs for community
"Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our Government is taking immediate steps to help our communities during the economic slowdown," said Minister Yelich. "With projects such as the conversion of the Viscount rink into an archery centre, the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program is not only creating immediate jobs for our community, but will also help pave the way for Viscount's future growth and prosperity."
Funding of $8,750 is provided by the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and Viscount will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $26,250. The conversion of the unused curling rink will increase recreational activity in the community, and make the building more cost-efficient to run.
Besides converting the unused curling rink into an archery centre for the Viscount Wildlife Federation, the installation of new lighting in the arena will result in better energy efficiency.
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Viscount curling rink to a healthy and active community," said Weekes. "Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community."
"The Village of Viscount and the Viscount Recreation Board would like to extend our thanks to the RInC Grant," said Mayor Moe Kirzinger. "This grant will benefit our community by providing us with the opportunity to upgrade our lighting in the Community Centre to become more energy efficient as well as provide for the expansion to our facility to include an Archery Centre."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
