Scandia, Alberta
Newell County will move forward with a new baseball diamond backstop and fence, as well as a new warm-up building at the outdoor skating rink in the Hamlet of Scandia thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, LaVar Payne, Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the replacement of two vital recreational facilities in the Hamlet of Scandia – baseball diamond and skating warm-up building.
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for the Scandia Recreation Playground Project” said MP Payne. “These recreational upgrades will ensure this community has access to the essential infrastructure they need today, and in the future, while keeping the unique cultural identity of this community strong.”
Funding of $10,236 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“The residents of the Hamlet of Scandia (young and old alike) have worked side by side to re-build this baseball diamond to provide another area for the residents to enjoy with friends and family,” said Scandia Playground Recreation Project Coordinator, Mrs. Connie Waddle. “Recreational areas provide opportunities for all residents to enjoy the camaraderie and have positive experiences with their peers.”
Residents of Scandia are heavily involved in outdoor recreational activities such as baseball and skating. Upon completion of these projects, the residents of Scandia will have the resources needed to further maintain their active lifestyles. This new recreation hub will also draw more visitors to the community while increasing the quality of cultural and recreational facilities for the Hamlet of Scandia, residents of Newell County and surrounding areas.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading, and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
