Rorketon, Manitoba
The Rural Municipality of Lawrence will be able to move forward with improvements to its recreational infrastructure thanks to funding from the two levels of government.
Today, the Honourable Stan Struthers, Manitoba Minister of Conservation and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Dauphin-Roblin; and Inky Mark, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification; announced funding for renovations that will create jobs in the Rorketon area.
"The community of Rorketon has been planning for many years to locate both the curling rink and skating rink under one roof, and it's my pleasure to be a part of this exciting announcement that will enhance the recreational activity for the RM of Lawrence," said Minister Struthers. "This investment will give residents more access to physical activity while also creating jobs helping to stimulate the local economy."
"Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our Government is taking action to create jobs and build stronger communities," said MP Inky Mark. "I'm pleased that the upgraded Lawrence Multi-Plex Centre will support growth and serve of our community for years to come."
The total cost of this project is $595,743. Federal funding of $196,595 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program under Canada's Economic Action Plan with the Province of Manitoba contributing $95,000. The Rural Municipality of Lawrence is also contributing to this project.
Under this project, the Rural Municipality of Lawrence will construct a new community centre in Rorketon. The Lawrence Multi-Plex Centre will combine all the community's existing recreational facilities under one roof, attaching it to the existing curling rink, which will also be upgraded.
"This will be a multi-use facility that will provide great benefits for the people in our community, especially our youth and seniors," said Fred Taylor, Reeve of the RM of Lawrence. "This is a much needed facility and we are most grateful for the financial assistance from the federal and provincial governments."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
Today's announcement continues the important steps the Province of Manitoba is taking to support economic growth by investing $1.6 billion this year into infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and renew the province's roads, schools, health facilities, and water treatment facilities.
