On August 31, 2009, Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice determined that the federal environmental assessment of Bruce Power’s proposed project to construct and operate new nuclear reactors located within Haldimand County, Ontario was no longer necessary.
The proposal involved the construction and operation of two nuclear reactors at the Lake Erie Industrial Park, located on the north shore of Lake Erie in Haldimand County, for the generation of approximately 2,200 to 3,200 megawatts of electricity.
In July 2009, the federal responsible authority, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), confirmed that Bruce Power had withdrawn its project application. The CNSC requested that the environmental assessment process be terminated as it would no longer exercise any power or perform any federal duty or function under subsection 24(2) of the Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control Act in relation to the project. The other responsible authority for the project, Transport Canada, also indicated that they would not take any action to allow the project to proceed and requested the termination of the environmental assessment.
Pursuant to section 27 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Minister Prentice has decided to terminate the environmental assessment of the proposed project.
