Ottawa, August 12, 2009 - Canadians join with people around the world in mourning the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Mrs. Shriver devoted her life to improving and enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and she inspired millions of people with her message of hope. As one of the founders of the Special Olympics movement, she recognized the power of sport to unite people and worked to create opportunities that allowed people with intellectual disabilities to compete, experience success, and showcase their talents to the world.
As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Special Olympics in Canada in 2009, we pay tribute to Mrs. Shriver's extraordinary legacy. Through her leadership and vision, the Special Olympics have become a dynamic global sports movement that offers people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity, not only to train and compete, but to reach their full potential.
