Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement in response to the announcement by the Honourable Gary Doer, the long-serving Premier of Manitoba, that he is resigning:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank Premier Doer for his many years of service to his province and his country. Premier Doer has led the Government of Manitoba for ten years and throughout this period he has been a valued partner among First Ministers and a strong voice for Manitoba within the Canadian federation."
"Premier Doer was first elected to Manitoba's legislature in 1986 and, during a provincial career spanning over twenty years, also served as an MLA, minister, and leader of the opposition. He can be very proud of a career spent serving the public."
