Saint-Liboire, Quebec, September 25, 2009 − Acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, Nicole Ménard, Member of the National Assembly for Laporte, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Montérégie region, today joined the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, in announcing that the Municipality of Saint-Liboire will receive $600,000 in joint government financial assistance under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) for waterworks upgrades.
This funding will be used to bring the municipality’s drinking water plant up to standard. The work will mainly involve reconfiguring the raw water transmission mains, installing water treatment units and rehabilitating the chlorination equipment. This project, which will directly benefit some 1,490 local citizens, promises to help improve the quality of the municipal drinking water supply.
Completion of this project will necessitate an overall eligible investment of $1,200,000 under component 1 of the MRIF. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute $300,000 toward this work, for a total of $600,000 in combined government funding, while the Municipality of Saint-Liboire will also assume $600,000 of the project’s costs.
Saint-Liboire Mayor Sylvain Gauvreau said he is pleased to see this project come to fruition in that it will improve local residents’ well-being while furthering the development of the municipality.
The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is a cost-sharing initiative of the Government of Quebec and Government of Canada that makes $470 million in funding available to Quebec municipalities and non-governmental organizations. With the financial participation of these municipalities and organizations, this initiative could result in the execution of more than $700 million in infrastructure work. The objectives of the MRIF are to improve community infrastructure, the quality of the environment and citizens’ quality of life, and to promote long-term economic growth.
The program, which is in force until March 31, 2010, is administered by the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy. Canada Economic Development is responsible for delivering the federal portion of the MRIF on behalf of the Government of Canada.
