BATTLE HARBOUR, Newfoundland and Labrador - The Battle Harbour Historic Trust will continue to preserve and showcase the architectural, cultural and historic resources of Battle Harbour, thanks to the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of $449,582 from the Government of Canada to help the Battle Harbour Historic Trust Inc. renovate the “Kitchen Building” heritage structure in the community.
“The restoration of our communities and preservation of our history is a key component to building a strong sustainable future,” said Minister MacKay. “The Government of Canada, through the Economic Action Plan, is pleased to support the renovations in Battle Harbour, which is a national treasure in terms of its incredible architectural heritage”
The interior restorations to the “Kitchen Building” will complement exterior upgrades already carried out, allowing the completed facility to host large conferences and events.
Situated on a small, near-shore island, Battle Harbour was for two centuries the economic and social centre of the south-eastern Labrador coast. Battle Harbour is designated as one of the National Historic Sites of Canada and in 2003 was recognized by National Geographic Travellers Magazine, Conservation International and the Smithsonian Institute as one of the most significant heritage sites in the world. The restoration and upgrades to amenities in Battle Harbour have resulted in the completion of heritage structures that depict early fishing settlements in Labrador.
The Battle Harbour Historic Trust is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the restoration and conservation of Battle Harbour’s historical architecture. The Trust seeks to diversify the economy of communities affected by the closure of the inshore cod fishery in and around the Battle Harbour region.
Government of Canada funding for this project is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), an important component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Projects to be funded under CAF can include reforestation activities, investments in machinery or equipment, demonstration of new mining technologies, initiatives to improve market access for products and other local economic diversification activities.
Over the next two years, the federal Community Adjustment Fund will deliver a total of $1 billion in economic stimulus to communities across the country in support of local economic development. Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador today announced an investment of almost $450,000 through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, to renovate a structure in the community known as the “Kitchen Building.”
With this contribution, the Battle Harbour Historic Trust will complete interior renovations to the building, enabling the historic community to host large conferences and events that existing buildings throughout the site cannot accommodate.
Over the next two years, the federal Community Adjustment Fund will deliver a total of $1 billion in economic stimulus to communities across the country in support of local economic development. In Atlantic Canada, CAF is delivered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
