SAINT JOHN — Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, New Brunswick Transportation Minister, Denis Landry, New Brunswick Tourism and Parks Minister, Stuart Jamieson, Abel LeBlanc, MLA for Saint John Lancaster and Ivan Court, Mayor of Saint John, today marked the beginning of construction of Phase 2 for the One Mile House Interchange during a site visit.
"Our government is investing in infrastructure projects such as the Route 1 One Mile House Interchange to boost the economy, create jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve safety and services to the region," said Mr. Weston. "We are working with the Province of New Brunswick to keep our economy moving through tough times and ensure that we emerge stronger than ever."
"We are accelerating this important project that will help continue to stimulate the economy and create jobs," said Minister Landry. "When it is complete, the One Mile House interchange will improve the flow of traffic, particularly for industrial businesses in the City of Saint John.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are working together to improve transportation infrastructure across the province. The construction of the One Mile House Interchange represents an estimated total investment of $65 million. Route 1 is part of the National Highway System. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $27.6 million towards the project.
Phase 1 of the project was completed this spring with Gulf Operators Ltd. of Saint John doing grading roadwork and soil stabilization valued at more than $3.7 million.
The One Mile House Interchange project includes a 600-metre structure, and associated ramps and roadways that will connect Route 1 to Bayside Drive and cross the CN rail yard, Marsh Creek and Rothesay Avenue.
The project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2012.
