BRACEBRIDGE, Ontario, September 15, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced $800,000 for a package of enhancements to downtown Bracebridge.
The new project, which will add new light fixtures, banners and street furniture along Manitoba Street/District Road 4, builds on earlier work approved through a 2005 downtown revitalization program.
Funding will come from the $50-million G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund, which was set up in February 2009 and is dedicated to legacy projects in Parry Sound–Muskoka. This strategy corresponds with Canada's Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern Ontario communities.
"Bracebridge is already a beautiful place to visit, but we're continuing the good work done by town council to date," said Minister Clement. "As demonstrated by the G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund, we're committed to making Parry Sound–Muskoka look its best for the Summit next June."
"The Town is very pleased to receive this funding from the G8 Legacy Fund. Bracebridge is the Heart of Muskoka and is recognized as one of the most picturesque communities in Ontario," said Don Coates, Mayor of Bracebridge. "The financial support received will help the Town ensure that our main street and our downtown core are in terrific shape as we welcome the world to Muskoka."
The 2010 G8 Summit will generate significant short- and long-term economic benefits for the region and the province and will be an exceptional opportunity for Canada to shine on the world stage.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
