Nokomis, Saskatchewan
Nokomis will upgrade its Recreation Centre thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament for Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Greg Brkich, MLA for Arm River-Watrous, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, announced federal funding for Recreation Centre upgrades that will create jobs for the Town of Nokomis.
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for the Nokomis Recreation Centre upgrades,” said MP Lukiwski. “Investments such as are these are creating immediate jobs and building modern and efficient community infrastructure for the long-term.”
Funding of $27,622 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan will provide a matching contribution and the Town of Nokomis will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $82,868.
Project activities include replacing lighting in the skating area; installing a concrete surface; new piping; concrete bumpers; and a header wall in the curling rink. These improvements will enhance the overall usage of the recreation facility year round and decrease operating costs, making the facility more viable in the long term.
“The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of the Nokomis Recreation Centre upgrades to a healthy and active community,” said Brkich. “Our investment in this project will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community.”
“The Recreation Centre is the hub of our community, with funding being provided by the RInC grant we are able to upgrade the facility,” said Mayor Beeler. “The grant makes it possible to utilize and facilitate more events to showcase our community.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
