GRAVENHURST, Ontario, September 16, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka, today announced $325 000 to enhance the existing Muskoka Tourism Highway 11 Visitor Centre in Kilworthy.
Providing information and services to approximately 60 000 visitors each year, the Muskoka Tourism Highway 11 Visitor Centre is a vital element of the Muskoka Region's tourism strategy. It also serves as a showcase for businesses in the region and locally produced products, making it an important economic development tool.
"Next June, when Parry Sound–Muskoka is the centre of attention worldwide, we want the centre of tourism in Muskoka to look its best," said Minister Clement. "We have an opportunity to leave a lasting impression of the Parry Sound–Muskoka region as a prime location for potential visitors."
"For us to put on a world event really gives us a significant advantage. It's our opportunity to show the world our quality of life," said Michael Lawley, Executive Director of Muskoka Tourism.
Funding will come from the $50-million G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund, which was established in February 2009 and is dedicated to legacy projects in the Parry Sound–Muskoka area. This strategy corresponds with Canada's Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern Ontario communities.
The 2010 G8 Summit will generate significant short- and long-term economic benefits for the region and the province and will be an exceptional opportunity for Canada to shine on the world stage.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
