The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced that the federal government is pleased to support the 2009 Celebrating Communities Conference with an investment of $140,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The Colchester Regional Development Agency is hosting the conference. The conference is being jointly supported by ACOA and the Nova Scotia Department of Economic and Rural Development.
The 2009 Celebrating Communities Conference and Awards to be held September 23-25 at the Best Western Trade and Convention Centre in Truro brings together hundreds of community representatives who are making a difference in their respective towns and villages.
“The Government of Canada continues to invest in and work closely with communities to identify economic development opportunities,” said Minister MacKay. “The 2009 Celebrating Communities Conference will highlight the very best in rural economic development successes from across Nova Scotia.”
The three-day conference will include daily workshops, an awards gala and cultural celebration to illustrate how communities have taken advantage of their strengths and assets to turn creative ideas into sustainable growth.
Conference speakers include CBC television news anchor Ian Hanomansing, author Barb Stegeman, and local entrepreneur and chef Michael Howell.
Previously, the Celebrating Communities Conference was held in Wolfville (2005), and Sydney (2007). Approximately 300 delegates from community, business and government across Nova Scotia are expected to attend.
