OTTAWA, September 24, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Ray Boughen, Member of Parliament (Palliser), today announced funding for Grain magazine, a quarterly literary journal published by the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild. Thanks to this investment, the best new writing from Saskatchewan writers will continue to be available to Canadians.
Created in 1973, Grain magazine features poetry, fiction, and literary non-fiction from Canada and abroad, with a special emphasis on authors from Saskatchewan. Funding will be used to defray Canadian editorial expenses and production costs.
"Arts and literary publications such as Grain magazine are a great way for Canadians to access quality literature and discover new voices," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in them."
"Grain magazine offers a diverse and valuable showcase for writing from Saskatchewan and across Canada," said Mr. Boughen. "I commend the magazine for supporting creativity over the past three decades, and hope that this funding will help Grain magazine achieve its mandate again this year."
The Government of Canada has provided $14,518 through the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component of the Canada Magazine Fund. This component is a formula-based contribution program that provides support for Canadian magazines that have been recognized for their excellence by the Canada Council for the Arts.
