Residents of Saint John will soon reap the benefits of an upgrade to the Carleton Community Centre thanks to a funding commitment from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC), a key Government of Canada economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Rodney Weston, MP for Saint John, made the announcement today alongside Saint John City Councillor Donnie Snook.
“Our Government understands that investments in recreational infrastructure help to build strong, healthy communities and that strong communities mean a strong nation,” said MP Weston on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). “This community centre project will create important economic activity through the construction phase and will provide long term benefits to the people of this area, making it a more attractive place to live and work.”
“The Centre is an important focal point for the West Side,” said Ivan Court, Mayor of Saint John. “The new gym floor will provide a safer surface for year round activities for youth and adults alike.”
The project involves replacing the ageing hardwood gymnasium floor in the Carleton Community Centre. This upgrade will help enhance the community’s recreational opportunities as well as create employment.
The Government of Canada has committed to provide $22,500 for this project through RInC, while the City of Saint John is investing $40,000.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building.
Under RInC, the Government of Canada will typically fund up to 33 per cent of eligible costs. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial, municipal and other partners. The federal contribution to any project receiving funding under this program will not exceed $1 million. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
