OSHAWA, September 2, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament (Oshawa), today announced funding for the Conseil des organismes francophones de la région de Durham (COFRD).
This support will enable COFRD to present artistic activities in cooperation with the Ontario Secondary School Students Association. The project aims to encourage young people to take part in the life of their community.
"Our Government is taking concrete action to promote and protect linguistic duality, and we are proud to support Francophone organizations in Ontario that care about getting young people involved in their community," said Minister Moore. "Through these activities, the Conseil des organismes francophones de la région de Durham is making an important contribution to the development and cultural vitality of the French-speaking community in Oshawa and to the social and economic well-being of the region."
"I congratulate the Conseil on its work with young people in the community," said Mr. Carrie. "Thanks to the activities it organizes, young people in the region have an opportunity to participate in activities in French."
"The Conseil recognizes the importance of this Government of Canada program, which will allow the young members of this minority official-language community to strengthen their feelings of pride, belonging, and identity," said Élaine Legaut, General Manager of COFRD.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $10,000 under the Community Life component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program . This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage aims to foster the development of Canada's minority Anglophone and Francophone communities and enable them to participate fully in all aspects of Canadian life.
