Miramichi, New Brunswick
Residents of Miramichi will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to improve local wastewater infrastructure. This project was announced today by Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, MP for Miramichi and the Honourable John Foran, Minister of Public Safety and MLA for Miramichi Centre. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.
This project will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing over $1.3 million towards the costs of the project. The City of Miramichi is contributing the balance of the $4.2 million total project costs.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come,” said MP O’Neill-Gordon. “Our investment of over $1.3 million through the Building Canada Fund will help stimulate the local economy and lay the foundation for growth in our community.”
“These infrastructure investments are very important to New Brunswick’s self-sufficiency agenda,” said Minister Foran. “These infrastructure projects contribute to the sustainability of our communities and ensure that communities like Miramichi continue to be places where people can live in a healthy, clean and safe environment.”
“We are very pleased to partner with the provincial and federal governments to improve the city’s infrastructure,” said Miramichi Mayor Gerry Cormier. “We are very appreciative of government’s commitment to improving our roads and in helping generate employment in this region.”
The project involves replacing approximately 1,500 metres of water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure along Newcastle Boulevard. These upgrades will improve the reliability of the wastewater collection system, significantly reducing the number of incidents of discharge of untreated wastewater into a nearby stream. The project will also significantly reduce the operational, maintenance and property damage costs that the city currently incurs due to the ageing and inadequate infrastructure.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
