Residents of Rexton will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade the community’s water and wastewater infrastructure. Funding for this project was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and the Honourable Shawn Graham, Premier of New Brunswick, as an example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing over $342,000 towards the cost of this project with the Village of Rexton contributing the balance of the $1,027,126 million. This investment will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure attracts businesses and creates jobs for today and for years to come”, said Minister Ashfield. ”Our government, through the Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is delivering on its promise to upgrade and replace important community infrastructure.”
“This infrastructure investment is very important to New Brunswick's self-sufficiency agenda,” said Graham “These infrastructure projects contribute to the sustainability of our communities, and ensure that communities such as Rexton continue to be places where people can live in a healthy, clean and safe environment.”
This project will extend Rexton’s sewer collection system to include areas presently underserviced. The extension involves the replacement of the existing sewer main on the bridge across the Richibucto River and the upgrade of the lift station controllers. The Village will also conduct a study on options for a new water supply, and a new well field or connection to existing supplies for neighbouring communities.
“After many years of planning it is gratifying that funding, through the Canada – New Brunswick Build Canada Fund, is being made available. This financial assistance will allow for our community to complete much needed utility system upgrades, said Rexton Mayor David Hanson. “I would especially like to thank Premier Shawn Graham and Minister Ashfield for supporting our community and this region and taking time from their busy schedules to assist in the announcements today.”
This project is one of 32 across the province getting underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities for the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over the next two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
