Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest in Saskatchewan's Recreational Infrastructure

Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan Minister of Municipal Affairs announced a joint investment of more than $4.7 million through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan that will help strengthen economic opportunities throughout the province.

“Our Government’s infrastructure investment to upgrade local recreational facilities provides a short-term, targeted stimulus to the economy and results in greater employment opportunities for Saskatchewan people,” said Minister Yelich. “This long-term investment will provide Saskatchewan residents with modern, more efficient and better equipped facilities that will serve our communities and families for their future recreational needs.”

Forty-six recreational facilities, such as rinks, ball fields, and swimming pools will receive upgrades. Examples are the development of Linear Park in Warman; improvements to the ball diamonds, soccer pitch and outdoor skating rink in Rosetown; and the complete construction of a multi-purpose recreational facility in Shaunavon.

“The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of these improvements to healthy and active communities,” said Harrison. “Our investment in these projects will increase recreational opportunities that will benefit the whole community.”

Federal funding of over $2.4 million is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan is investing more than $2.3 million, bringing the federal-provincial contribution to more than $4.7 million on the total project amount of over $11.6 million.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
