Vernon, British Columbia
Colin Mayes, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Harper Government support to help the Vernon Science and Discovery Society strengthen economic opportunities in Vernon.
“ Our Government, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, is providing a timely, targeted stimulus to western Canadian communities, helping reduce the impacts of the global recession, ” said MP Colin Mayes. “ This project will help create jobs, promote tourism, and provide fun new learning opportunities for our local families.”
The Vernon Science and Discovery Society will design and market new educational content for the Okanagan Science Centre. Funding will also create employment opportunities through heritage restoration work on the exterior façade of the Okanagan Science Centre.
Improvements to the Okanagan Science Centre's program content and building appearance will enhance visitor numbers, membership and contribute to the overall tourism industry in the North Okanagan, as well as help promote science and technology to children and youth.
“ The Okanagan Science Centre is deeply honoured to receive this support from the Community Adjustment Fund. We are committed to the ongoing scientific education and continued growth of our children and our community. The CAF contribution will go a long way to further this mission, ” said Sandi Dixon, Executive Director, Vernon Science and Discovery Society.
Federal funding of $86,430 is provided under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
A part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) is a two-year, $1 billion national program that will provide an economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in rural communities.
The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry.
