Fort Nelson will undertake a park revitalization project thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today, the Honourable Jay Hill, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for park upgrades that will create jobs in Fort Nelson.
“ The new sports facilities and fitness path will benefit our local families for years to come,” said Minister Hill. “Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our Government is creating immediate jobs and building stronger, healthier communities. ”
Funding of $327,256 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Funding toward the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality will help construct one full size basketball court, two full size tennis courts and two full size volleyball courts at the Art Fraser Park in Fort Nelson, British Columbia. Project activities also include installation of fencing around the perimeter of the park for safety reasons, and construction of a paved path alongside the park for pedestrians and cyclists.
“ Thanks to this funding, Art Fraser Park is quickly becoming a first-class recreational site on par with other facilities in other Canadian Towns, ” said Mayor Bill Streeper, Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. “ This exciting initiative, combined with other recreational projects in Fort Nelson, will serve to improve the recreational opportunities for citizens of the Northern Rockies. ”
The project will benefit Fort Nelson, a small single industry northern community, through improved sports amenities, promotion of physical fitness, and creation of much needed employment.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
