OTTAWA, ONTARIO, September 4, 2009—On Monday, September 7, Canadians will celebrate Labour Day. In recognition of this day, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, acknowledged the important contribution made by Canada’s working men and women to the national economy.
“Labour Day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the continued dedication of Canadian working men and women and their invaluable contributions to Canadian productivity,” said Minister Ambrose. “The Government of Canada is taking action to provide our workers with safe, healthy and productive workplaces to help ensure that our economy emerges from the global recession stronger than ever.”
The Government of Canada is committed to doing everything it can to support and protect Canadian workers and to help workers and businesses succeed in the current economy. For example, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan,the Government has acted by expanding the Wage Earner Protection Program to include coverage for severance and termination pay. This expansion provides an additional $25 million in financial assistance to eligible workers whose employers are declared bankrupt or become subject to a receivership.
Through the Labour Program, the Government of Canada is promoting fair, safe and productive workplaces and cooperative workplace relations, assisting workers and employers, and supporting modern, innovative work environments.
