GRAVENHURST, Ontario, September 16, 2009 - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka, today announced $375 000 to put in place new tourism signage at strategic gateway entrances to Muskoka.
The signs will greet G8 delegates to the region as they arrive for the 2010 G8 Summit, which takes place in Huntsville from June 25 to 27, 2010, as well as thousands of visitors annually for years after the Summit has ended.
"These signs will extend a warm welcome to our guests through the G8 Summit next June, and beyond," said Minister Clement. "I'm thrilled to announce our government's support for this project."
"This event gives us a significant advantage over other places and will provide a number of legacy opportunities," said Michael Lawley, Executive Director of Muskoka Tourism, speaking of the benefits the Summit would bring to the region.
Funding will come from the $50-million G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund, which was established in February 2009 and is dedicated to legacy projects in the Parry Sound–Muskoka area. This strategy corresponds with Canada's Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern Ontario communities.
The 2010 G8 Summit will generate significant short- and long-term economic benefits for the region and the province and will be an exceptional opportunity for Canada to shine on the world stage.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
