YARMOUTH , Nova Scotia
Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced a Government of Canada investment in the Town of Yarmouth totalling $500,000 made available through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA) Innovative Communities Fund (ICF).
“The Government of Canada is pleased to invest to complete a series of upgrades to the Yarmouth Mariners Centre,” said MP Kerr. “This investment is reflective of the goals of our Government’s Economic Action Plan, which continues to provide timely and targeted stimulus to communities across Canada.”
Upgrades to the facility will work to increase the convention capacity of the facility and enable it to become host to a wider variety of events. Specifically, the facility will see the addition of a generator, the purchase of removable flooring so the facility can be transformed from a skating rink to a conference centre easily, and the installation of kitchen equipment.
“This expansion gives Yarmouth the additional tools necessary to host large, high-profile events,” said Warden Leland Anthony of the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth. “This will not only bring attention to the other business, services, and assets of our community, it will work to solidify Yarmouth’s reputation as the place to do business in southwestern Nova Scotia.”
The Yarmouth Mariners Centre is a 1,750-seat multi-purpose and double ice surface arena serving Southwestern Nova Scotia. The 65,000 square foot facility officially opened on November 28, 2001 and is home to the Yarmouth Mariners of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.
ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
The Government of Canada is investing in important upgrades to assist the Yarmouth Mariners Centre.
