Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, October 23, 2009 – Acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, Jacques Gourde, Member of Parliament for Lotbinière–Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, today joined Nicole Ménard, Member of the National Assembly for Laporte, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Montérégie region, and Yvon Marcoux, Member of the National Assembly for Vaudreuil and Vice-chair of the Committee on Public Administration, acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, in announcing that the Centre multidisciplinaire de la Cité des jeunes (CMCJ) will receive $16,794,588 in joint government financial assistance under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec (FCCQ) for the construction of a multidisciplinary complex.
Spearheaded by the Centre multidisciplinaire de la Cité des jeunes (CMCJ), this project calls for construction of a 10,200 square-metre multidisciplinary sports complex on land located near the train station and CIT bus terminal, bordering the Félix-Leclerc autoroute and de la Gare Boulevard. The complex will include a track, four tennis courts and a triple gymnasium on the ground floor and multipurpose rooms, spectator stands, a restaurant area, offices and conference rooms on the upper level.
"By funding the construction of this new building, we are helping to create a stimulating environment that will promote the practice of family activities and sports. The importance of modern public facilities is a well-established fact. The Government of Canada is proud to be able to offer its citizens the high level of quality of life that has become our country's trademark. That is why we have implemented a vast action plan to stimulate job creation while ensuring the renewal of municipal infrastructure," stated Jacques Gourde.
"In supporting this major project, the Government of Quebec is moving forward to ensure the province's municipalities have infrastructure that suits their unique realities while fostering sustainable development, a key element of any modern, wealth-building economy. By injecting new capital into the Quebec Infrastructure Plan, our government is looking to accelerate the execution of numerous infrastructure projects throughout the province, like this one in Vaudreuil-Dorion, in an effort to improve the well-being of Quebecers, create jobs and promote a high-performance economy," explained Minister Ménard.
"This complex will promote the development of excellence in sports and provide a venue for sports-study programs offered through the region's elementary and high schools. More than 6,000 students will be able to benefit from this facility. The population of Vaudreuil-Dorion is growing and the arrival of this new facility can only serve to accentuate that phenomenon. The presentation of large-scale sports and social events is sure to have a direct impact on the local and regional economy and on the revitalization of community life in the area," added Yvon Marcoux.
Completion of this project will necessitate an overall eligible investment of $25,191,882. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute $8,397,294 toward the work, for a total of $16,794,588 in combined government funding, while the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion, in partnership with the CMCJ, will also invest $8,397,294 in the project.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding the execution of infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. These communities are thus able to use this assistance to improve infrastructure that is in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
An unprecedented funding commitment on the part of the Government of Canada, the Building Canada Fund – Quebec provides stable and predictable funding to support infrastructure projects. In Quebec, nearly $4 billion will be allocated to that end.
The contribution announced today has been awarded through Canada's Economic Action Plan. For more on this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
