Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Quebec, October 2, 2009 – Acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister for La Francophonie, today joined Sam Hamad, Quebec Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for the National Capital region, acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, in announcing that the City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures will receive more than $1,690,000 in joint government financial assistance under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec (FCCQ) for the construction of Lisbonne Street in François-Leclerc industrial park.
Lisbonne Street will run a distance of approximately one kilometre, linking Fossambault Street to the west with des Grands-Lacs Street to the east. The project will also involve the installation of water mains and sanitary and storm sewer pipes as well as lamp posts. Completion of this work will make it possible to accommodate a major high-voltage transformer station to serve users in the western sector of the Québec metropolitan area and many other neighbouring municipalities.
This work will directly contribute to the creation of short-term employment, the development of additional industrial lots and the renewal of community infrastructure from a sustainable development perspective.
“Once this work has been completed, the municipality and its industrial park will have community facilities that better meet the needs of their residents and customers. Infrastructure projects such as this one play an important role in furthering the growth and sustainable development of communities,” noted Minister Verner. “The Government of Canada is devoting considerable effort to improving the quality of life of Canadians in a concrete way. Indeed, under the new Building Canada plan, an unprecedented $33 billion will be invested in infrastructure, $4 billion of it in Quebec. An investment of that magnitude can only strengthen our economy, improve our environment and ensure our prosperity,” she added.
“In supporting this major project, the Government of Quebec is moving forward to ensure the province’s municipalities have infrastructure that suits their unique realities while fostering sustainable development, a key element of any modern, wealth-building economy. Through its Quebec Infrastructure Plan, our government is looking to accelerate the execution of numerous infrastructure projects throughout the province in an effort to improve the well-being of Quebecers, create jobs and promote a high-performance economy. Our government wants to leave Quebec municipalities a legacy of quality infrastructure with which to face the challenges of the future,” stated Minister Hamad.
“Once finished, the construction of Lisbonne Street will optimize the availability of services in François-Leclerc industrial park, consolidate our municipality’s infrastructure and ensure its long-term viability,” commented Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures Mayor Marcel Corriveau.
Completion of this project will necessitate an overall eligible investment of $2,538,375. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute $846,125 toward the work, for a total of $1,692,250 in combined government funding, while the City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures will also invest $846,125 in the project.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding the execution of infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. These communities are thus able to use this assistance to improve infrastructure that is in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
The contribution announced today has been awarded through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. For more on this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
