Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, October 5, 2009 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $750,000 in repayable funding to eCycle Solutions Inc. for the acquisition of equipment to establish a waste management plant for expired electronics. Granted through the Business and Regional Growth program, this funding will generate an overall investment of $6 million and result in the creation of 40 new jobs over two years in the City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
Founded in 2005, eCycle Solutions is a pan-Canadian firm specializing in the recycling of electronics equipment and parts. The enterprise, whose head office is located in Alberta, runs facilities in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia and now Quebec. By operating in an emerging sector of the economy, the new Salaberry-de-Valleyfield plant is expected to be able to expand and grow with the strengthening of environmental legislation.
“In an effort to help stimulate the economy of communities in difficulty, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting the creation and development of enterprises that, like eCycle Solutions, are seeking out new business opportunities and giving themselves the means to succeed. I am delighted to see this project come to fruition and am convinced it will help revitalize the economy of a region still reeling from the closure of the Goodyear plant,” explained Minister Lebel.
The Canada Economic Development Montérégie business office has identified the environment and microelectronics as priority sectors for the development of the region. Preserving the manufacturing structure of the community targeted by this project is also considered a top objective.
“While it is important to help the microelectronics sector grow and prosper, it is equally important that this be done in an environmentally-responsible manner, with a view to fostering sustainable development. The processes used by eCycle Solutions ensure, on the one hand, that mercury and other hazardous substances do not find their way into the environment and, on the other, that the lifespan of such recycled materials as steel, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals can be extended. This helps preserve our raw mineral natural resources for future generations. All of eCycle Solution’s operations meet the strictest requirements of the Recycler Vendor Qualification Program, Canada’s national standards for electronics recycling,” the Minister of State concluded.
