Feds make safety improvements at Port of Fortune
FORTUNE, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR — The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada is contributing $387,000 for safety improvements at the Transport Canada port facility in Fortune, Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Our government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is working hard to stimulate our economy and secure jobs for all Canadians," said Minister MacKay. "This port is vital in maintaining a strong and stable economy for all those who live and work in Fortune and in surrounding communities. We are committed to helping rural communities thrive and reach their full potential; our government's contribution for structural improvements to this port facility helps us achieve this goal."
The projected work will primarily consist of replacing or repairing various fenders and decking. The maintenance repairs will begin immediately and are expected to be complete by December 2009.
Through this investment, the Government of Canada is ensuring the ongoing maintenance of the key structures of the wharf. The Fortune facility is a major economic pillar in the region and this investment will effectively serve to extend its useful lifespan. It will also ensure that the facility will remain fully operational for all its current and future users.
The Port of Fortune is an international port, the only Newfoundland and Labrador port that provides a regularly scheduled ferry service to the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.
Funding for this project was provided from the existing financial framework.
