Doaktown, New Brunswick
Residents of Doaktown will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to improve local water infrastructure. This project was announced today by Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, MP for Miramichi and Premier Shawn Graham. This project is just one example of the commitments of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.
This project will enhance local services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing nearly $200,000 towards the costs of the project. The Village of Doaktown is contributing the balance of the total project costs. “The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come,” said MP O’Neill-Gordon. “Our investment of nearly $200,000, provided through Canada’s Economic Action Plan will help stimulate the local economy and lay the foundation for growth in this community.”
“This infrastructure investment is very important to New Brunswick's self-sufficiency agenda," said Graham. "This infrastructure project contributes to the sustainability of our communities, and ensures that communities such as Doaktown continue to be places where people can live in a healthy, clean and safe environment."
“This project will greatly reduce the dependency on our only water supply, said Doaktown Mayor Charles Stewart. Village Council and Staff want to extend a special thanks to the two levels of government for this wonderful announcement.”
The project provides funding to construct a backup main water source for residents living on the north side of Doaktown. Geographic obstacles and the current water system design make the water source unreliable and susceptible to long term interruption. The upgrades to the water infrastructure in Doaktown will ensure the health and wellness of residents.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
