OTTAWA, October 16, 2009 - Books have a special place in our lives. They inspire, educate, inform, and allow us to discover new worlds. Stories that take place within Canada are particularly notable, as they reflect our culture, our values, and our heroes, real or imaginary. They foster Canadian pride and help readers outside our borders know us better.
Our Government understands the contribution of arts and culture to our communities, our identity, and our economy. That is why we offer a variety of programs that help make the Canadian publishing industry even more dynamic. These include our Canada Book Fund, which aims to increase access to works by Canadian authors.
Since 1974, the Toronto Book Awards have celebrated works of literary or artistic merit that place Toronto front and centre. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Austin Clarke, the winner of this year's award, as well as all the finalists. You bring the city streets to life for readers here and in other countries, now and for generations to come.
