Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the announcement that the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded to Willard S. Boyle, a Canadian, and his colleagues George E. Smith and Charles Kao:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada and Canadians across this country, I congratulate Willard Boyle and his colleagues George Smith and Charles Kao on receiving the Nobel Prize. Their discoveries have helped shape today’s networked society and revolutionize photography.
“Dr. Boyle’s work led to the invention of digital imaging. This achievement has made the processing and distribution of images easier and continues to provide new possibilities in scientific exploration.
“This is a remarkable accomplishment. Thanks to the work of Dr. Boyle, people in Canada and around the world benefit in their everyday lives and the boundaries of science have been expanded.”
