HAMILTON, ON (October 5, 2009) - The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) will be presenting a webinar: Listen Up: Chemical Exposure & Hearing Loss in the Workplace, on October 28, 2009 to explain the effects of ototoxic industrial chemicals on workers’ hearing.
Dr. Thais Morata of the National Insitute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will discuss the effects of chemical agents, the interaction between these agents and noise, and strategies for preventing work-related hearing loss. Listen Up: Chemical Exposure & Hearing Loss in the Workplace will cover ways to protect your hearing, including a hierarchy of controls and new institutional guidelines and practices; the challenges involving exposure limits to chemicals for preventing hearing loss; and how audiometric testing can help discern between hearing loss caused by excessive noise and chemical agents.
The webinar is intended for occupational health physicians and nurses, audiologists, industrial hygienists, health and safety professionals, managers, and health and safety representatives.
The presentation will be webcast live, Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time from CCOHS in Hamilton, Ontario.
About Dr. Thais Morata
Dr. Thais Morata is an audiologist with more than 25 years of expertise in the area of hearing loss prevention. She is currently at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where her main area of interest is the prevention of auditory effects of combined exposure to noise and chemicals in the workplace. A native of Brazil, Dr. Morata earned degrees in speech pathology and audiology and communication disorders from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (B.S.; M.S.) and the University of Cincinnati (Ph.D.).
