ARCTIC BAY, NU – The Government of Canada has awarded a design contract for the Nanisivik Naval Facility (NNF) in Nunavut to WorleyParsons Westmar Ltd., from North Vancouver, B.C. This contract marks a significant milestone in a project that will support the Canadian Forces’ ability to defend Canada’s sovereignty in the North.
“Awarding this contract demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring Canada’s security and exercising sovereignty in the North,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “As part of the Canada First Defence Strategy, the Government continues to modernize the Canadian Forces by providing the infrastructure they require.”
This contract, valued at just under $900, 000, is for the first of four design phases of this project. This initial design phase will establish the various requirements for construction, as well as preliminary design work that will lay the foundation for the remaining design phases. The other three design phases will involve conceiving detailed plans and designs, developing drawings, and preparing construction estimates for the future Department of National Defence facility.
This facility will support the Government of Canada's goal of enhancing naval presence in Canadian waters. The NNF will function as a logistics hub to support the Canadian Navy, and other Government of Canada vessels in the Arctic during the navigable season. Construction work at the NNF could possibly begin in 2011 and is forecasted to be operational by 2014. The construction portion of this project will benefit communities within the region by creating jobs and enhancing the safety and security of the people.
In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to ensure the Canadian Forces have the facilities they need to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government’s significant investments in defence infrastructure provide economic benefits to communities across Canada.
The Government of Canada awarded this design contract for the NNF following an open, fair, and transparent competitive process.
