Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced a Government of Canada investment totalling $65,000 in the Annapolis Digby region to help the area build through the current downturn in the global economy.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to assist municipalities in Western Nova Scotia develop a long-term economic strategy for the area,” said Mr. Kerr. “This investment reflects the goals of our Government’s Economic Action Plan by continuing to provide timely and targeted stimulus to communities across Canada.”
A $65,000 Government of Canada investment in the Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency will be used to develop a five-year development strategy for the region’s six municipal units. The aim is to generate a plan which will address a range of initiatives in the tourism, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and other economic sectors important to the region.
The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is contributing $40,000 to this project through its Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), with the Department of Foreign Affairs (International Trade) providing an additional $25,000.
“By developing a 5-year investment strategy, we’re taking an innovative approach to positioning the Annapolis Digby region for future economic growth,” said Mike Gushue, Managing Director of the Annapolis Digby Economic Development Association. “We will look to those sectors that are in a growth mode, develop business cases for those opportunities that show the most potential and present these to qualified investors. It’s a practical, business approach to attracting investment to our region.”
