Caraquet, New Brunswick - Winter sports enthusiasts in the Acadian Peninsula will benefit from better facilities thanks to the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Percy Mockler, Senator for Saint-Léonard, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced an investment totalling $46,000, through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, for two projects in Tracadie-Sheila and Bas-Caraquet.
“The Government of Canada, through the Economic Action Plan, is investing in the health and wellness of Canadian families while supporting the local economy,” said Senator Mockler. “By investing in valuable local infrastructure we are increasing construction activity and enhancing local facilities and services for the long-term benefit of the residents of Tracadie-Sheila and Bas Caraquet.”
“Le Sureau Blanc cross-country ski club is the focal point of winter recreational activities in the local community and the surrounding area,” said Tracadie-Sheila Mayor Aldéoda Losier. “The improvements made to the trails will help attract skiers to the region and allow families and future generations to come together and practice their favorite sport for decades to come.”
“The Village was delighted to have obtained the federal government’s assistance for the renovation of its outdoor skating rink,” said Bas-Caraquet Mayor Agnès Doiron, “It will improve recreational services for residents and promote health and well-being among the young and not so young.”
The Government of Canada will invest $37,000 and the Town of Tracadie-Sheila $40,000 to help relocate and expand the existing infrastructure at Le Sureau Blanc Cross Country Ski Club. The project includes installing water and sewer services, landscaping and furnishing the building. The Village of Bas-Caraquet will be upgrading its outdoor rink, replacing its outdated facilities and repairing change rooms. The Government of Canada is contributing $8,500 to this project while the municipality is providing $7,400. Thanks to these initiatives, Bas-Caraquet and Tracadie- Sheila area residents will be able to continue to enjoy important recreational facilities together with family and friends for decades to come.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC Program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities. In Atlantic Canada, the program is delivered by ACOA. The fund, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, will help mitigate the impacts of the global economic recession by increasing construction activity in the recreational sector.
