Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the death of Dr. Constantine George “Gus” Mitges, B.V.Sc., D.V.M., V.S.:
“I was saddened to learn of the death of former Member of Parliament Dr. Gus Mitges.
“Gus served for over 20 years as Member of Parliament for Grey-Simcoe, and later Bruce-Grey, from 1972 until his retirement in 1993.
“Born in Greece, Gus moved to Canada at the age of six and was raised in Guelph, Ontario. Prior to his election as a Member of Parliament, Gus was a veterinarian, local school board member and an alderman in Owen Sound.
“In 1995, Gus received one of Greece’s top civilian awards when he was made a Commander of the Order of Phoenix for his work as president of the Greece Parliamentary Association.
“Gus’s dedication to his community will always be remembered. On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
