GOLDEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA — A $27.2-million contract has been awarded to Emil Anderson Construction Ltd. of Hope, B.C., to design and build the Golden Hill to West Portal section of the Trans–Canada Highway – Kicking Horse Canyon project, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond announced today.
"The Trans–Canada Highway is a vital link for transporting commercial goods and for tourism," said Bond. "The Kicking Horse Canyon project is increasing safety for all users by replacing an old, winding, two-lane highway with four lanes of divided highway that's designed to a modern standard."
"The Government of Canada is proud to support such a project that will have important economic benefits across the B.C. Interior by encouraging the flow of goods once construction is completed," said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia–Pacific Gateway.
The 3.8-kilometre Golden Hill to West Portal (Kicking Horse Canyon) project will provide four lanes on the Trans-Canada Highway through to the signals at Highway 95, a grade separation at Golden Donald Upper Road, consolidated accesses, improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, and greater protection for wildlife with fencing and a crossing structure. Work is scheduled to finish by March 31, 2012.
A new fourth lane on Golden Hill was recently completed using local hired equipment and a major works paving contract, awarded to Dawson Construction of Kamloops.
Both the Golden Hill to West Portal and the Brake Check to Yoho National Park projects are being cost-shared under the federal Building Canada Fund's Major Infrastructure Component. The first two phases of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, which were also cost-shared by both governments, have already been completed.
