Investment in Lévis Forts National Historic Site of Canada
LÉVIS, QUEBEC, DECEMBER 17, 2009 -- On behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis–Bellechasse, today announced an investment in the revitalization of Lévis Forts as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“This investment confirms the Government of Canada’s commitment to stimulate the regional tourism economy while improving the presentation and accessibility of this significant site on the south shore of Québec,” said Mr. Blaney.
At Lévis Forts National Historic Site of Canada, an investment of $600,000 will go towards presenting Fort No. 1 and building road access from Route 132. This sum is in addition to the investment announced last March, bringing the total investment to more than $3 million.
“This project will help Levis Forts National Historic Site become a destination of choice for travelers,” said Minister Prentice. “In our Economic Action Plan, we recognize just how important history, heritage and tourism are to the economy and the important role the Government can play to support to local economies and national historic sites.
Located on the heights of Point Lévy, Parks Canada Fort No. 1 is the last link in a chain of three forts built under the supervision of British military engineers between 1865 and 1872. This pentagonal-shaped fort was opened to the public in 1982 and provides a panoramic view of Québec, Île d'Orléans and Côte-de-Beaupré. It is also host to special events such as the Twilight Concert.
