It is with great sadness that I share with you news of the passing of Commissioner (Rtd.) Maurice Jean Nadon in the early morning hours of December 21, 2009.
The significant contributions made by Commissioner (Rtd.) Nadon throughout his 36 years of service have left a lasting impression on the Force. Born July 8, 1920, in Mattawa, Ontario, Commissioner (Rtd.) Nadon joined the RCMP at the age of 20. Over the course of his career, Commissioner (Rtd.) Nadon served in the Criminal Investigation Branch in Quebec, British Columbia, and National Headquarters. Before being named Commissioner on January 1, 1974, he was the Commanding Officer of “O” Division and subsequently Deputy Commissioner, Criminal Operations. During his time as Commissioner, he emphasized a war against organized crime, introduced female members into the uniform ranks, led operations through the Montreal Olympics in 1976, and introduced a prevention-oriented concept of policing. Commissioner (Rtd.) Nadon retired from the RCMP on September 1, 1977.
Commissioner (Rtd.) Nadon is survived by his son Robert and daughter Suzanne, their spouses and children. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and those who had the opportunity to work with him.
Visitation will take place between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22 and between 9:00 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23 in the Hall of Colours at Beechwood National Memorial Centre, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue in Ottawa, Ontario.
