High Level, Alberta
Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to help the Town of High Level strengthen economic opportunities in the community.
“ Our northern communities have been hard hit by the downturn in the economy and especially by the slowdown of the forestry sector, ” said MP Warkentin. “Investments like this one create jobs when they are needed most and support community sustainability and I am very pleased to see approval of this project for the Town of High Level. ”
This investment is allowing the Town of High Level to replace its public works maintenance facility with a new facility that is better able to meet the Town’s growing needs. Replacing the facility will significantly lower operating costs by reducing water, fuel, and electrical consumption and lessening the need to outsource equipment maintenance. In addition to generating immediate employment opportunities in the area, the project will further benefit the community by creating neighbouring green space for public use.
Federal funding of $2,543,040 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Town Council is extremely pleased with this announcement and project, ” said Bob Ernst, Mayor of the Town of High Level. “It will create jobs, help existing businesses retain employees in these trying times and provide a facility that will serve the citizens of High Level for decades. ”
The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
