In just under 10 months since Canada's Economic Action Plan was released, projects across Western Canada are up and running, jobs are being created, and communities across the West are seeing the benefits of the Action Plan at work.
"Our Government is investing in projects that will not only create jobs in our communities right away, but are also paving the way for Canada's future growth and prosperity," said the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "The Canadian economy is already showing signs of recovery and that is why we remain committed to stay on course and fully implement our two-year Economic Action Plan."
As of November 26, 2009, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) has approved 209 Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) projects with an investment of $244.3 million toward total project costs of $405.3 million. Clients report that through these projects they expect to create or maintain more than 3,800 full time equivalent jobs during this challenging economic time.
In addition, WD approved a total of 517 Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) projects with an investment of over $100 million toward total project costs of $378.8 million. Clients report that through these projects they expect to create or maintain approximately 2,000 full time equivalent jobs during this challenging economic time.
Overall, CAF and RInC combined investments in the West have leveraged an additional investment of $430 million, making a significant contribution to western communities.
The Government of Canada has taken unprecedented action to implement Canada's Economic Action Plan (EAP) as quickly and effectively as possible with 97 per cent of the 2009-10 funding in the Action Plan already committed across the country. WD's role is to deliver the Community Adjustment Fund and Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program in Western Canada. These two initiatives support Canada's Economic Action Plan by creating jobs, upgrading community infrastructure and stimulating local economies across the West.
