December 18, 2009 - White City, Saskatchewan
White City will move forward with ball field upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Andrew Scheer, Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu’Appelle on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Honourable Christine Tell, Minister of Government Services, announced funding for this project, which will create jobs for the community.
“I’m pleased that our Government, through the Economic Action Plan, is supporting improvements to White City’s ball field,” said MP Scheer. “This project will create jobs, encourage greater participation in physical activity, and ensure that our communities remain strong for many years to come.”
“As many Saskatchewan communities are growing, there is a need for infrastructure investment that contributes to the health and well-being of Saskatchewan people,” said Tell. “With this funding, the recreational needs of White City and area will be met and will continue to move Saskatchewan forward.”
Funding of $80,000 for the project is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The province will provide matching funding while the community will provide the balance of the funding for a total project cost of $240,000.
The existing ball field will be expanded and electrical and irrigation systems will be installed. With the upgrades, the facility can be designated as a Class A facility, and be suitable to host regional championships. The upgrade will also include a building that will house a canteen and storage space for maintenance equipment.
"Our community and our youth will benefit from a facility that will be second to none in the region and capable of hosting major interprovincial tournaments and events," said Mayor Bruce Evans. "This project is bringing together volunteers from White City, Pilot Butte, Balgonie, and the Rural Municipality of Edenwold to plan and coordinate this project, which is an excellent example of what regional level cooperation can achieve."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in federal RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces by Western Economic Diversification Canada.
